You’re a Club Member Chair Starting a New Year… What’s First?

Your a new club membership chair
A new Rotary year brings new opportunities, new goals, and for many clubs, a new Membership Chair. Whether you’re new to the role or a seasoned veteran, July is the perfect time to establish priorities that will help your club thrive throughout the year. So whether you are deciding ‘what’s next?’ or ‘what’s first?’ click the ‘read more’ button below…

If you haven’t already, take a close look at your club’s membership snapshot, meet with your club president, and establish membership goals for the year. Have those goals been entered into Rotary Club Central and the Membership Success Center? Just as important, have you created a Membership Action Plan that outlines how your club will achieve them?

Once those foundational steps are complete, here are five priorities you may want to tackle first:
  • Focus on Member Appreciation and Retention – One of the most important responsibilities of a Membership Chair is helping ensure that every member feels valued, appreciated, and connected. Consider reaching out personally to members, especially newer members, to learn about their experiences and identify opportunities to increase engagement. Retention remains the most effective membership strategy.
  • Build Your Membership Team – Are you a committee of one? Even small clubs should recruit at least one partner to help with member engagement and retention. Larger clubs may benefit from several Rotarians sharing responsibilities for recruitment, onboarding, engagement, and retention.
  • Create a Membership Calendar – Plan membership-related activities throughout the year and work closely with your Public Image Chair to incorporate membership messaging into your club’s content calendar. Consistent communication helps keep membership top of mind. (Click Here for a very simple basic membership calendar example).
  • Strengthen Your Family of Rotary Culture – Membership growth begins with the member experience. Work with your club president and Family of Rotary Chair to create a welcoming, inclusive, and fun environment where members, families, and guests feel they belong.
  • Be Ready for Prospective Members – Have a clear process in place when visitors express interest in joining. Prompt follow-up, meaningful connections, and a thoughtful onboarding experience can make all the difference.

July is more than the beginning of a new Rotary year—it’s an opportunity to build momentum that will carry your club forward for the next twelve months. Successful membership growth doesn’t begin with recruiting. It begins with creating a club where members are engaged, valued, and proud to belong. Start with a plan, focus on your members, and the growth will follow.

And remember, your District Membership Committee is here to help. Whether you’re looking for ideas, resources, or simply a sounding board, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support your success.
