August is Membership Month: Are You Ready?

August is Membership Month - Are you Ready?

August is Rotary Membership Month–a great opportunity to showcase your club, strengthen member engagement, and introduce Rotary to people in your community who are looking for meaningful ways to serve.  While it’s often associated with attracting new members, it’s also the perfect time to recognize, celebrate, and engage the members who already make your club successful. After all, the best membership strategy begins with creating an outstanding experience for current members.

If you’re looking for ideas, here are five activities that can make an impact:

1. Share “Why Rotary?” Testimonials
Schedule a few members at each August meeting to briefly answer two questions: Why did you join Rotary, and why do you stay? These personal stories remind members why Rotary matters and help prospective members see the value of joining.

2. Host a Discover Rotary Open House
Combine a club open house with a “Discover Rotary” session. Invite guests to learn about your club’s projects, community impact, fellowship opportunities, and the many ways Rotary members make a difference locally and around the world.

3. Organize a Public Service Project
Many prospective members connect more strongly through service than through a meeting. Plan a hands-on project, promote it widely, and invite community members to volunteer, working side-by-side with your Rotarians. It’s also a great way to strengthen camaraderie among existing members.

4. Launch a Fun Guest Challenge
Create a friendly competition encouraging members to bring guests to a meeting, social event, or service project. Keep it lighthearted, recognize participation, and celebrate success. Membership growth should be fun and club-wide, not the responsibility of a single committee.

5. Conduct a Membership Media Blitz
Use August to tell your club’s story. Feature member spotlights, service projects, community impact, anniversaries, and club achievements through local media, newsletters, social media, and your club website.

Consider inviting a representative from the District 6910 Membership Committee to speak at one of your August meetings. We can share membership trends, successful ideas from around the district, and resources that can help strengthen your club.

Membership Month isn’t about filling seats—it’s about strengthening the club experience and sharing Rotary with others who are looking for ways to make a difference. The most successful clubs don’t wait for people to find Rotary. They actively tell their story, invite guests to experience service and fellowship, recognize the contributions of their members, and create a welcoming environment where new members can thrive. August is the perfect time to start that conversation.

And remember, your District 6910 Membership Committee is here to help. Whether you’re looking for ideas, resources, speakers, or proven membership strategies, we’re ready to point you in the right direction.
